A matte black mug fired from dense Amakusa stone and clay, its rim left unglazed to show the raw material beneath the finish. Made in Hasami, Japan.
The Hasami Porcelain mug in black is finished in a flat glaze with no sheen, over a high-fired body of Amakusa pottery stone and refined clay sourced near Hasami Village. The surface stays dry and stone-like, and warms to the hand rather than turning slick. The body is dense, which gives the mug real weight, walls of even thickness, and a rim fired to resist chipping. Leaving its edges unglazed is a finishing choice most makers skip — proof the piece is fired, not coated.
Part of a system, not a single piece
Every Hasami piece of the same diameter stacks flush — bowls, plates, and the wood lid that turns this mug into a covered vessel or a coaster, across the ceramic and wood line. Start with one and you are starting a set that grows without ever looking mismatched. Microwave-, dishwasher-, and food-safe.
- Proprietary porcelain-clay blend – A denser body than mass-produced stoneware, it holds heat longer, resists chipping at the rim, and develops a subtle patina over time rather than degrading with use.
- Raw matte exterior – Left unglazed on the outside, the surface has a dry, earthy grip that warms quickly in the hand and offers noticeable tactile contrast to the smooth interior.
- Straight-sided cylindrical profile – Uniform walls and a flat base mean the mug stacks without rocking, fits standard cup organizers, and presents cleanly on a table without visual excess.
- Modular Hasami compatibility – Dimensions are calibrated to align with bowls, plates, and trays across the Hasami collection, so pieces acquired separately over time stack and store as a unified system.
- Microwave- and dishwasher-safe construction – The clay body is fired to handle repeated thermal cycling without surface cracking, glaze dulling, or moisture absorption — performance the matte finish retains long-term.
- Handmade in Hasami, Nagasaki – Production remains in a region with over 400 years of continuous ceramic output, where the local clay composition and kiln standards are inseparable from the finished object's quality and consistency.
