A low, wide lounge chair with a curved backrest, deep seat, and rounded transitions throughout. Built on an FSC-certified solid oak frame.
The NORR11 Hippo Lounge Chair carries a curved backrest, a deep seat, and rounded transitions between the seat and back structure. The proportions sit low and wide, supporting full-body recline rather than upright posture.
Compression-resistant cushioning
Layered foam under the upholstery holds its shape through extended daily use, resisting compression rather than flattening into the frame over time. The seat retains its profile through repeated sitting cycles.
Four oak finishes with full upholstery range
The frame is available in four solid oak finishes: natural, light smoked, dark smoked, and black. The full upholstery range applies across all four, with frame and upholstery specified independently.
- FSC™-Certified Solid Oak Frame – Sourced from responsibly managed forests, the oak frame is built to carry the chair's weight over decades without warping or loosening at the joints.
- Four Oak Finish Options – Natural, light smoked, dark smoked, and oiled finishes allow the chair to read as a warm accent or a cooler, more neutral presence depending on your interior.
- Low, Wide Seat Profile – The deep, low seat positions you closer to the floor in a reclined posture — suited for long reading sessions or relaxed conversation rather than upright sitting.
- Curved Backrest with Lateral Support – The wrap of the backrest holds the body from the sides, reducing the tendency to shift or slouch over extended periods.
- Layered Cushion Construction – Multiple foam densities are stacked to provide initial softness on contact and firmer resistance underneath, so the seat holds its shape rather than compressing flat.
- Broad Upholstery Selection – The chair is available in a range of fabrics and leathers, making it possible to coordinate with existing textiles without ordering a custom piece.

Product questions
Designed in 2021, modeled on the hippopotamus
The Hippo Lounge Chair was designed in 2021 by Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl for NORR11. The series takes its form directly from the hippopotamus — the barrel-shaped body translated into a low, wide seat with a curved backrest and rounded transitions throughout, set against two straight legs and a hard-lined wooden profile. That contrast is the whole idea of the chair: soft, organic volumes carried on a deliberately linear structure. Hyldahl founded NORR11 after a career in fashion; Hansen is a Danish furniture designer who has worked with the brand since 2015. The Hippo is a contemporary design rather than a reissue, and it is built to read that way — its reference is animal form, not a historical chair.
The Hippo earns its place as the relaxed, low-and-wide counterpoint to the more upright lounge chairs in the collection. It is built for full-body recline — a chair to sink into rather than perch on — and its rounded forms soften a room that has too many hard edges. The independent choice of four oak finishes and a full upholstery range makes it genuinely adaptable to a specific interior rather than a fixed look. KANSO is an authorized NORR11 retailer, so every Hippo is sourced directly from the brand with its warranty intact. For a buyer who wants contemporary Scandinavian design with a clear point of view, it is one of the most comfortable chairs we carry.
Why the oak frame anchors a soft form
The Hippo is built on an FSC-certified solid oak structure: the backrest frame and the rear legs are solid oak, with a plywood-and-pine seat frame, all carried on cut foam beneath the upholstery. The oak is the counterweight to the chair's soft shapes — a firm, visible structure that keeps a deep, rounded seat from reading as shapeless. The frame comes in four oak finishes — natural, light smoked, dark smoked, and black — and the finish is specified independently of the upholstery, so the wood can be set light against a pale textile or dark for more contrast. The upholstery itself is offered in fabric or sheepskin, or supplied as COM. Beneath it, layered cut foam is built to resist compression, holding the seat's profile through repeated daily use rather than flattening into the frame.
