A gray mug glazed to a high gloss over dense Amakusa stone clay, made in Hasami, Japan.
The Hasami Porcelain mug in gloss gray seals that clay body completely under glaze, inside and out, which is why the rim resists chipping and the walls hold an even thickness from base to lip. Pick it up and the weight tells you what it is. The same glaze gives the mug its soft gray sheen and shrugs off the crazing and staining that mark cheaper ceramics after months of hot coffee and dishwasher cycles. It is built to look the same in year five as it does on day one.
Part of a system, not a single piece
Every Hasami piece of the same diameter stacks flush — mugs, bowls, plates, and the wood lid that turns this mug into a covered vessel or a coaster. Start with one and you are starting a set that grows without ever looking mismatched. Microwave- and dishwasher-safe.
- Custom porcelain-clay body – A denser material than standard porcelain, it retains heat longer and resists the hairline crazing that develops in thinner mugs over repeated dishwasher cycles.
- High-gloss glaze inside and out – Applied to both surfaces, the glaze seals the body completely, preventing coffee, tea, or residue from absorbing into the clay over time.
- Straight-sided profile – The cylindrical form stacks without wobble and fits standard mug hooks, cup organizers, and cabinet shelves more efficiently than tapered or wide-bodied alternatives.
- Close-set integrated handle – Kept tight to the body rather than arched outward, the handle reduces the footprint on a crowded counter and keeps the visual weight of the mug balanced when held.
- Modular compatibility – Proportions are engineered to align with the broader Hasami system — bowls, plates, and trays stack and nest together, so pieces bought separately over time still form a coherent set.
- Made in Hasami, Nagasaki – Hasami has produced porcelain continuously since the 16th century. The region's clay composition and kiln tradition are the direct reason this mug holds its glaze quality at a production scale.
- Microwave- and dishwasher-safe construction – The glaze and body are fired to withstand thermal cycling, meaning daily machine washing does not dull the finish or weaken the form over time.
