Product questions

Most modern porcelain is made faster than Hasami allows itself to be made. The four stages—mixing the clay, forming it, glazing it, and firing it—are often consolidated into one workshop or machine to get tableware to market at this price. Hasami still splits that work among specialists, as it has since 1599. That makes it slower and more expensive to run, and it is a big part of why we carry the brand: a $32 mug costs what it costs because no step was skipped, not because the process is inefficient.

One firing, no glaze, nothing added after the kiln

Natural is the one finish in the Hasami range that leaves the kiln as a finished piece. Gloss Gray and Matte Black both go through a second stage after the first firing, where a glaze is applied and the mug is fired again to set it. Natural skips that second pass entirely, so the surface you're holding is the fired clay body itself, not a coating over it. That's what accounts for the dry, slightly matte grip the description points to: there's no vitrified glaze layer sitting between your hand and the Amakusa-stone-and-clay body underneath. It's also why two Natural mugs from the same batch can vary slightly in tone. A glaze evens out what's underneath it; an unglazed surface doesn't hide the small variations in the clay, so the color runs a shade warmer or cooler mug to mug.
