—Description & details
The Hasami Porcelain Tumbler in Natural is a straight-sided cylinder for drinking or storing, made from a blend of crushed Amakusa stone and clay and fired unglazed, so the stone-and-clay body itself is the surface you see and hold. Hasami calls the body semi-porcelain, and it combines qualities of porcelain and earthenware. Temperature and humidity in the kiln change how the color and texture come out, so no two pieces are exactly alike. Takuhiro Shinomoto of Tortoise in Venice, California designed the line, and it is made in Hasami, Nagasaki, where porcelain has been produced for almost 400 years.
At 3 3/8 inches across it shares its diameter with the mugs, the sugar pot and creamer, and the smallest plate, which sits on top as a lid. Hasami took the stacking idea from jubako, the tiered lacquer boxes used to serve food in Japan.
