A compact lounge chair with a lowered seat and fully upholstered backrest, built on an FSC-certified solid wood frame. Designed by Steven Bukowski for New Works. Available in walnut, black beech, or oak.
The Bukowski Lounge Chair seats at 15.75 inches from the floor: lower than a standard side chair and calibrated for a sustained reclined posture. The backrest is padded and fabric-covered across the full surface, adding lumbar contact without changing the leg profile. This is a departure from the open-back original Bukowski Chair. The legs are cut from solid timber and shaped in a continuous curve, tapering toward the rear and visible from every angle.
Frame and fabric pairings
Three combinations are available, each sold as a complete unit. Walnut with Rest 023, a warm-toned woven fabric by Kirkby Design, sits at the top of the range. Black-painted beech with Wooly Plus 1008, a dense Nevotex textile, is the entry option. Oak with Sacho Moss 017, a heathered green wool, sits between the two.
- Lowered Seat Height – At 15.75 inches from the floor, the seat height is calibrated for a full recline rather than an upright posture, making the chair better suited for living rooms than dining contexts.
- Fully Upholstered Backrest – The backrest is padded and fabric-covered rather than left as exposed wood, adding lumbar contact across the full back surface — a departure from the original Bukowski Chair.
- Curved Solid Wood Legs – The legs are cut from solid timber and shaped in a continuous curve rather than turned or tapered straight, which keeps the undercarriage visually open while maintaining structural depth at the joint.
- Three Distinct Frame and Fabric Pairings – Available in walnut with a warm-toned woven fabric (Rest 023), black-painted beech with a dense textile (Wooly Plus 1008), and oak with a heathered fabric (Moss 017) — each pairing carries a different price point reflecting the timber cost.
- FSC Mix 70% Certified Timber – Walnut and oak variants are produced from FSC-certified wood, with full chain-of-custody documentation available from New Works.
- Single-Carton Shipping – At 25.85 lbs product weight, the chair ships in one carton with packaging dimensions of 31.5 × 27.56 × 27.56 inches — no assembly required on delivery.

Product questions
From the Bukowski Chair to the Lounge Chair
Steven Bukowski founded his Brooklyn studio in 2016, working across custom residential commissions and collaborations with design brands. His recognition on the American Design Hot List in 2017 and the commission to design seating for the Flora Bar at the Met Breuer marked an early period of focused work across both public and private contexts. The Bukowski Chair for New Works came in 2020: a solid wood side chair with an open back and a continuous-curve frame. The Lounge Chair is the next piece in that series. The seat drops to 15.75 inches, the backrest closes and becomes fully upholstered, and the proportions widen. The triangular leg form remains. The revision moves the chair from a dining-adjacent posture into something more deliberate, a chair designed to hold a position for longer.
