The New Works Tense Pendant reads as paper-like in appearance but holds its expanded form under heat and handling without ribs or internal supports. Tyvek is a non-woven, fully recyclable material that carries the structure on its own, which is why the shade has no visible framework interrupting the light.
Sizing and installation
The pendant ships in Small, Medium, Large, or Extra Large, each with an integrated UL-listed LED light source, arriving ready to hang without a separate bulb purchase. The fixture connects to a standard electrical canopy.

Designed by Panter & Tourron around material tension
The Tense Pendant was designed in 2020 by Panter & Tourron, a Swiss studio that works at the meeting point of material research and product design. The name is literal. The whole series is an investigation of tension: the shade is not a frame with fabric stretched over it but a Tyvek membrane pulled taut by thin carbon rods, held in shape by nothing more than the opposing forces of the rod and the sheet. That idea is also why the pendant packs flat. The designers describe Tense as a piece for a more mobile way of living, and the construction follows from that brief: the rods and shade collapse into a slim box, then assemble by hand without tools. What looks like a soft, floating cloud is the visible result of a structural argument, and the form could not exist without the engineering underneath it.
Most large pendants buy their presence with material weight. The Tense does the opposite: at its largest it spans more than three feet yet weighs only a few pounds, which is why it can read as a cloud rather than a fixture. We carry it because that lightness solves a specific problem — a room that needs scale overhead without visual heaviness, above a dining table or in a stairwell or an entry. The four sizes also reward being used together, with smaller pendants clustered at staggered heights. It is worth choosing the size against the volume of the room rather than the table, since the Tense is read as a shape in the air before it is read as a light.
A Tyvek membrane under carbon-rod tension
The shade is sewn from Tyvek, a non-woven material that is durable, lightweight, fully recyclable, and rated Class 1 for flame retardancy. It reads as crisp paper and diffuses light the way thin paper does, but it holds its shape under heat and handling in a way paper cannot. The structure is the part worth understanding. Carbon rods are set into the sewn shade and put it under constant tension, and that tension is what gives the pendant its expanded, even form. The rods are slim enough to stay out of the light, so the shade glows across its full surface rather than concentrating brightness at the source. Each size carries an integrated, dimmable LED at 2700K with a CRI of 85, rated for 60,000 hours, so the fixture arrives complete with no separate bulb to buy. The pendant hangs from cables with a magnetic connection, and the four sizes — Ø55, Ø70, Ø90, and Ø120 — scale the same construction from a focused fixture to a piece that stretches beyond a metre across.
