Scandinavian Home Office: Desks, Desk Lamps and Desk Tools
The KANSO home office collection brings together desks, desk lamps and desk tools from Danish design houses and Japanese blade makers, chosen for rooms where work shares space with daily life. Audo Copenhagen, Ferm Living, New Works and Nuura supply the furniture and lighting. Hayashi Cutlery and Craft Design Technology, both making in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, supply the scissors and letter openers. KANSO is an authorized U.S. retailer for each Danish brand, with insured delivery.
Most pieces are sized for a home office rather than an open-plan floor: a wall-mounted desk 39.4 inches wide, a walnut desk under four feet, and table lamps that run on a rechargeable battery, so the light moves from desk to shelf at the end of the day. The materials stay plain and lasting: solid walnut and beech, linoleum, opal and hand-blown glass, linen, marble, travertine, stainless steel and unlacquered brass.
Desks for the Home Office
The Ferm Living Feve Desk takes its rounded outline from fève, French for bean. It is solid walnut, 45.6 by 23.4 inches, on legs carved into stretched ellipses. For a larger surface, the Ferm Living Feve Table runs 62.4 inches on the same walnut legs, with adjustable feet. The Ferm Living Tarn Desk sets an oblong top with a beveled edge on four linear legs, all in solid FSC-certified beech, in Dark Stained Beech or White Oiled Beech. It doubles as a small dining table.
Two Audo Copenhagen desks solve the clutter problem in different ways. On the Audo Copenhagen Eclipse Desk, designed by Fred Rigby Studio, a lid in the asymmetrical top lifts to reveal storage inside the round steel column below. The Audo Copenhagen Corbel Desk, by Krøyer-Sætter-Lassen, mounts to the wall on steel brackets shaped like architectural corbels. That leaves the floor clear, with a gap behind the linoleum top for cables. See every desk and table in Tables & Desks.
Desk Lamps: Task Light and Ambient Light
For directed light over a page or keyboard, the Audo Copenhagen Wing Table Lamp, designed by Kenneth Bergenblad in the 1980s, turns a polished aluminum shade on a fixed stem. The Ferm Living Arum Table Lamp hangs an angled aluminum shade from an iron arch, counterweighted by a solid travertine base.
For softer, even light around the desk:
- Audo Copenhagen JWDA Table Lamp: Jonas Wagell's opal glass shade on a steel or marble base, with one knob that switches and dims.
- Audo Copenhagen Hashira Table Lamp: a linen cylinder on a sandblasted ash base by Norm Architects, after Japanese lanterns.
- New Works Margin Table Lamp: tiered linen panels on a black steel base, designed by John Astbury.
- Nuura Blossi Table Lamp: hand-blown glass lit from within, designed by Sofie Refer, in clear glass over nordic gold or opal over black.
- Audo Copenhagen Torso Table Lamp: a ceramic base and linen shade by Krøyer-Sætter-Lassen, with a brass touch dimmer.
Cordless lamps suit a desk that clears at night. The Audo Copenhagen Ray Table Lamp, by Daniel Schofield, steps through 25, 50 and 100 percent brightness on a rechargeable battery. The New Works Kizu Table Lamp, Portable, by Lars Tornøe, sets a white acrylic half-sphere on a solid marble base, with a three-step touch dimmer in the top. The JWDA, Torso, Column and Reverse also come in portable versions. Browse them all in Table & Portable Lamps.
Desk Tools Made in Seki, Japan
The Allex Scissors are cut from a single sheet of stainless steel, with one curve running from blade tip through handle. Hayashi Cutlery introduced them in 1974, when they won Japan's Good Design Award, and they sit in the permanent collection of Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. The matching Allex Letter Opener followed in 1975 and starts at $14. The Craft Design Technology Scissors have a symmetrical handle for either hand, and a screw instead of a rivet, so the blades can be taken apart and resharpened. To keep clips and keys in one place, the Ferm Living Basho Tray, Oval is solid brass, left unlacquered to patina with use.
