Hasami Porcelain: Mugs, Plates and Bowls from Nagasaki, Japan
Hasami Porcelain is a modular Japanese tableware system built around one shared diameter, with plates from $12, bowls from $16, and mugs from $32. Every piece is made in Hasami, Nagasaki from local Amakusa pottery stones and fired to a density that carries noticeably more weight in the hand than standard ceramic tableware. KANSO is an authorized U.S. retailer for the complete Hasami Porcelain catalog, and every piece on this page ships from U.S. inventory with insured delivery.
Porcelain has been made in Hasami Village continuously since 1599 under a divided-labor system in which separate craftspeople mix the clay, mold the form, glaze the surface, and supervise the kiln. Takuhiro Shinomoto reinterpreted that process in 2010 as a stacking system for daily use, drawing on the jubako lacquerware box and the nested oryoki bowls of monastic meals. For the full background, read our guide to Japanese craftsmanship and Hasami Porcelain.
Choosing a Finish: Natural, Gloss Gray or Matte Black
All three finishes share identical dimensions, so they mix freely across a table setting. Natural is unglazed, showing the raw porcelain-and-clay body with a dry, matte grip. Matte Black uses a flat glaze that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Both unglazed and matte surfaces take on marks from oils and acidic food over time, which is expected of an unsealed body rather than a fault. Gloss Gray uses a proprietary clear glaze over the natural body and resists staining, making it the practical choice if patina is a concern.
Hasami Porcelain Mugs
The mug is the most recognized piece in the system, a straight-walled cylinder with a uniform 3.4-inch diameter in 11oz, 13oz, and 15oz heights that nest when stacked. The handle is sized for a full-hand grip rather than a two-finger pinch, with a balance point that holds steady when full. Available in Natural, Gloss Gray, and Matte Black from $32. Hasami Porcelain Plates
Plates run through the same system in six diameters: 3", 5", 7", 8", 10", and 11", from $12. The 10" and 11" work as dinner plates, while the 3" and 5" suit side servings, condiments, and use as covers. Each size pairs with a corresponding mug, bowl, or tray, so a plate set over a bowl closes it as a lid and a smaller plate under a mug works as a saucer. Made in Natural, Gloss Gray, and Matte Black. Hasami Porcelain Bowls
Bowls come in two depths. The standard bowl sits low and open in 3", 5", 7", 8", and 10" diameters from $16, sized for cereal and soup at the smaller end and shared serving at 8" and 10". The tall bowl holds a straight-sided profile with no taper from base to rim, running deeper at the same diameter for noodles, grains, and layered servings. Tall bowls start at $24 in gloss gray (3", 5", 7") and $36 in natural and matte black (5", 7"). Because bowls share the collection diameter, any plate sits on top as a lid, turning a bowl into covered storage that moves from table to refrigerator without a second container. Trays, Glassware and Serving
The Oak Tray in 3.325" is made from solid oak in Japan and works as a lid, coaster, or compact serving piece, at $26.50. The Glass Tumbler is $16 in clear, gray, and amber. The Bottle at $72 serves water, sake, oil, or dressing with a stain-resistant finish, and Incense in Sandalwood is $25.
Care and Everyday Use
Hasami Porcelain is dishwasher safe, microwave safe, lead-free, and chip-resistant under daily use. It is not made for oven or open-flame temperatures. The unglazed natural and matte black surfaces develop patina from oils and acidic food, while the gloss gray glaze resists it.
